Sit With the Father

By: Jenifer Metzger

Open my eyes so that I may contemplate
wondrous things from Your instruction.
Psalm 119:18

Life has been busy lately. I feel like I have rushed from task to task, project to project. Knowing the importance of having time with Jesus each day, I made sure to never skip my time. Yet, one day as I sat Bible in hand, I felt pulled.

Dishes still sat in the sink, needing to be rinsed and placed into the dishwasher. I had a couple of phone calls to make. Laundry was piling up. Errands to run. There was just so much to do. I felt pulled to put my Bible away and get to work. What is one day, right?

When my husband coached baseball, he always required the boys arrive one hour before game time to warm up. One game day a player was running late. When he arrived at the bottom of the first inning, he wanted to jump right in. My husband wouldn't allow him to do so. He made him go out and warm up, telling him that it was for his own benefit. Warming up is a must. An athlete doesn't skip warm ups to get to the game. We shouldn't skip our time with God to get on to the day or the next project.

Friend, time with God is not a chore, it is not something to check off a list, and it is definitely not something to skip. It is an honor, a privilege, and a blessing. No matter what awaits you each day, no matter how full your planner is, or how tired you are, sit with the Father.

It's time for Share A Link Wednesday! Each Wednesday we invite you to leave a link to your latest blog post in the comments. We still desire to connect women of God with one another and encourage each other in Christ. So grab a cup of coffee or glass of sweet tea, sit back and visit a few blogs. Be encouraged and share your own stories.

  1. Love this, Jenifer! Time with God is NOT a chore! :) Such great reminders here!

We are looking at the word "Delight" from His Word this week over at InstaEncouragements.

  2. Great post. Often throughout my life I have to remind myself that Christianity is a relationship. We tell people that before they become Christians: it's a relationship, not a religion. But then we tend to fall into thinking that time with God's Word is just part of the routine instead of communication with the One who loves us best. As we turn our thoughts that way, devotions are no longer a chore or duty.

I wrote this week about how shining our lights might not always be welcome--no more welcome than someone shining a light in our eyes when we're trying to sleep. But Jesus said to shine them anyway, and He draws others into the warmth of His presence. https://barbaraleeharper.com/2020/08/30/shining-light-in-a-dark-and-drowsy-world/

  3. Thank you so much for this wonderful reminder. I too have been guilty of putting my time with God aside to complete my to-do list only to find my day chaotic. We need that time to be quiet and still in his presence. This week I wrote about the difficult task of talking to our daughters about body image, https://keepingthetiethatbinds.com/2020/09/01/talking-to-our-daughters-about-body-image-and-weight/
