The Key to Not Fearing 2020

“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me." ~John 14:1

It’s been a crazy 6 months - a worldwide pandemic, quarantine, mask mandates, social distancing, murders, heated discussions surrounding racism, rioting, and now we’re in the throes of a big election year.

It’s a lot. And it can all be rather fear-inducing if we allow it to be.

But what if we remembered that we actually have a choice? What if we remembered that we don’t have to allow the events of this year to induce fear in us, because of the fact that the same power that rose Christ from the dead lives in us (see Romans 8:11) and gives us the ability to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5)?

There is one key thing we have to remember, though, and it is both the key to not fearing 2020, as well as the key to being able to actually take every thought captive in the first place: that key is knowing the character of God.

You can’t let go of fear unless you take hold of faith and trust. And you can’t have faith in and trust God unless you know His character, unless you know that He is, in fact,:

•trustworthy
•good
•kind
•faithful
•compassionate
•loving
•holy
•in control
•wise
•all-knowing

And the list could go on.

The reality of it being God’s Word that equips us for our daily lives (2 Timothy 3:16-17) is true because it is only within the pages of His Word that we come to fully know Him as He is. And it is only in knowing Him as He is that we will be able to find Him trustworthy and thereby be enabled to let fear go.

Friend, truly make 2020 the “year of the Bible” in your life, and see how much your faith will be built up and your fear lessened, even in the midst of a year like this one.
