What Do Laundry and Worship Have in Common?

"Keep this book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." Joshua 1:8

Have you ever had one of those days when you wake up late, the hot water heater goes out, you forgot to put your clothes in the dyer that you wanted to wear today, you realize that your out of milk and little Timmy is running a fever? You know, one of those days when you wish you could hit the rewind button and start over. I think we've all had our share of those not so perfect days that help to make up everyday life. Sometimes they happen more often than not. Days when you wish instead of a "that was easy button", there was an automatic, "do over button".

Days like these are when Satan tries to be sneaky. He tries to get inside our head and say, "Yep, here we go again, you better get up and get moving. You don't need to read your Bible today, just skip it. It really doesn't matter anyway." When we hear this voice we need to be mindful to put on the full armor of God so we can be ready for His attacks. We need to be able to stand strong in the Lord.

The truth is......reading the Bible does matter. Skipping one day of reading and praying can easily turn into two or three and it can snow ball from there. When life seems to get turned upside down and your schedule doesn't go as planned, you need to remember to improvise.

Laundry Day (44/365) #365projectInstead of reading your Bible in the morning, you can easily read it throughout different parts of your day. For example, instead of labeling laundry as a dreaded chore, turn it into quite time with God. Praying, reading the Bible and meditating on His Word can be done anywhere. While your folding laundry, treat it as an act of worship. Thank Him for the fact that you have the clothes for your family to wear and that they have fresh sheets and blankets to sleep on. To many people, this is a luxury. You could listen to sermons, or the Bible on your ipod or CD while your working. Use your every minute of the day to the fullest. Pray and draw close to Him, and take the time to be quite and listen as well. This is also a great time to memorize scripture. Have verses that your working on written on index cards and place them next to you as you go about your work.

When your children see you do this, you will be setting and example for them. You will be teaching them how to follow Jesus from little on, so it becomes second nature when they are older. So, the answer to the question, "What do Laundry and Worship Have in Common? The answer is both can be done at the same time so that the Lord might be glorified.

Can you think of other times that you can worship the Lord, other than during a normal devotion time? If so, please share your ideas in the comment section so that we can all be encourage.

Many Blessings~

  1. Love this, Shari. I had never thought of 'laundry' as an opportunity to spend time with God.

Thank you for this great post!

  2. I like to worship the Lord when I am driving in my car alone. I look at the sky, and the trees, and the grass, and the flowers, and thank Him for all of the beauty He created.

I turn on the radio and listen to Christian music and sing along, and praise Him as I drive.

And...I pray out-loud to the Lord...talking to Him as I would a passenger in the next seat!

I sometimes drive to the park and sit in my car and watch the ducks on the pond, and reflect on all of God's goodness to me. I keep a small Bible in the car so that I can read passages while I am parked and have some time to meditate on them as I gaze at the clouds that are floating by.

This is just one of my favorite ways to commune with the Lord. I also love singing in the shower to Him... and also praying as I wash my troubles down the drain! You should try it! It feels so refreshing...and it is such a private time, where nobody bothers you or distracts you.

    Love, Linda

  3. Oh...and I forgot to say that this was a wonderful idea to "turn laundry time into a prayers session"...and to pray for each person as you fold their clothes and while you put them away. Praying blessings upon the family that you love. Great post!
