Marriage Monday - Are You A Nag?

How many times do we have to ask our husbands to put their shoes up!?  How many times do we have to remind them to bring the trash cans up to the house after the trash truck comes or put their plate in the dishwasher?  Most wives will say they are always telling their husband to do the same things over and over.

Our husbands have a special word for this constant reminding and asking.  It is called a nag.

am going to go out on a limb here and guess that when we start nagging our husbands, it sounds more like Charlie Brown's mom than it does a loving wife asking her husband to do something.
God has a lot to say about a nagging wife

"Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife." Provers 21:9

"Better to live in desert than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife." Proverbs 21:19

"Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife." Proverbs 25:24

Wow!  If we nag our husbands, they will prefer to live on a corner of the roof or in the desert than in the house with us.  I want my husband to desire to be with me, not on the roof!

My husband is a shoe fanatic and he is always leaving his shoes out.  I used to nag him constantly over this.  At one time I counted and he had five pairs of tennis shoes (yes he owns that many, like I said fanatic!) around the house not put up correctly.  My constant nagging him to put his shoes up did not make him want to do it, it did not make him do it, but it did frustrate both of us.  After praying about it, I decided to stop the nagging.  The fact is, he knows where the shoes go, for whatever reason they just don't always end up there.  I stopped nagging and left the shoes.  If they get in my way, I will put them up myself.  I found that it takes less time for me to put them up than to nag him about it.  After a few months of this my husband is better about his shoes.  Not perfect, but better.  If the are out now and I walk over to get them he will say to me, "Oh sorry I left those out, I'll get them in a minute."  And normally he does.

Ladies, we need to pray and ask God to help us not be a nagging wife.  We need to ask God to help accept our husbands as they are, forgetfulness, laziness and all.  Then when you are tempted to nag, instead, tell your husband that you love him and appreciate all he does.

Sweet Blessings~

  1. I used to have the same problem...well, not exactly. He still leaves his shoes by his chair in the living room...he reasons he is going to put them on again the next day. Anyway, I don't worry about it any more. He even has gotten to the place where he helps with dinner dishes. He is doing laundry some, too. It's amazing! I try not to nag and I fail sometimes. But, more than anything, I want to have a peaceful, God-filled home. Thank you for reminding me to watch that I don't nag! Have a great day!

  2. What a great reminder NOT to be that nag nobody wants to live with. I am guilty of being that nag around the house. But instead I'm trying really hard to praise God that I have a husband to pick up after. Thankful he has a good job to wear those shoes too. Trying to focus on the blessing rather than the inconvenience is helping me. Great post today girl!:)

  3. Great post. Papa always says, I was going get them one of these first days which he does sometimes but mostly he forgets one of these first days. I will do it but most of the time thinking to myself, one of these first days will never come. I am thankful that I have him to pick up after but I still get angry but say it to myself. Thanks for a great reminder.

  4. I know I am guilty of this, but I'm trying to be better. I'm thinking more about how I would feel if my husband talked to me the way I sometimes talk to Him. God is helping me to do better.

  5. I'm a big nag, John will leave his shoes in the middle of the floor so I will stub my toes on them or He will leave his clothes in the middle of the bedroom floor ~ yes I'm a big nag BUT God is working on me and I'm not so bad anymore I've loosened up a lot more and I know John is appreciative of me not riding his back so much.

  6. haha...I don't have this problem with my husband...if anything my husband should be nagging me about putting my shoes away! I usually accumulate 2 or 3 pairs on the stairs :) I've always thought this was good advice, we need to "pick our battles carefully". Somethings are just not worth getting all stressed out about.

  7. I used to be a really bad nag. Really bad. But then I realized it, thank God, and mended my ways. I didn't want to be 'that nagging wife at home'. I wanted to be someone my hubby wanted to be around!
