A Prayer to Number Our Days

By: Sarah Geringer

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 NIV

Heavenly Father, thank you for autumn.
You could have chosen to make leaves
turn straight to brown
then fall off.
But because you wanted
to share your beauty with us
you paint the leaves brilliant colors
before winter.
Thank you that though the fall days
are short,
they brilliantly reflect your beauty.

In the view of eternity
our lives are even briefer
than the days of autumn leaves.
We are like wildflowers that grow one day
and are cut down the next.
None of us knows
when our last breath will be drawn.
None of us is guaranteed
to live another day.
Yet in your providence
you sustain and nurture us
like a loving parent.

Since your ways are higher than our ways,
and your thoughts higher than our thoughts
teach us to think like you do, Lord.
Help us remember that each day
holds a world of possibilities
to know you, glorify you, and serve you.
Give us hope, joy and peace
as we hold each moment loosely
and surrender it back to you,
O Blessed Controller of all things.

May we surrender
our paper planners
our online calendars
and all our sticky notes
to your supreme plans.
We may plan our steps
but you direct our paths
dear Jesus.
Holy Spirit, give us your wisdom
as we move forward with intention
trusting you to guide and lead us
so our hearts will experience
your perfect peace.

  1. Having just spent a few days enjoying the colorful foliage in New Hampshire, this was beautiful to read this afternoon. This >> "Help us remember that each day holds a world of possibilities to know you, glorify you, and serve you." May God help me to number my days and live them to the glory and honor of His Name. Blessings!
