The Big Implications of our "Small" Daily Work

By: Rebekah Hargraves

Priscilla Shirer wrote these words in her "Discerning the Voice of God" Bible study:

"We often find God's will when we do what's next and obediently respond to the normal duties of life...We encounter God's guidance when we engage and invest ourselves in our current circumstances."

In that portion of her study, Priscilla had been teaching on the story of Saul as found in 1 Samuel 9, the story about how Saul first became king. In verses 3-10 we read that young Saul was sent on a mission to find his father’s donkeys who had gone missing. He was having no success locating them and finally decided to search for Samuel, the prophet, to see if he could ascertain where they were.

Unbeknownst to Saul, God had already told Samuel the day before that He would, the very next day, send to him a young man from the land of Benjamin whom he was to anoint as commander over all of Israel:

"Now the Lord had told Samuel the previous day, 'About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him to be the leader of my people, Israel. He will rescue them from the Philistines, for I have looked down on my people in mercy and have heard their cry.' When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said, 'That’s the man I told you about! He will rule my people.'" ~ 1 Samuel 9:15-17

Imagine Saul’s surprise when he goes to Samuel to simply seek his help in the seemingly mundane task of finding lost donkeys, and it is precisely that task which leads to his becoming king. Wow!

Sweet sister, I don’t know what your mission today is. I don’t know what the seemingly mundane work is that you are called to perform right now, right where you are. Maybe you’re a student diligently plugging away day after day at your studies. Maybe you’re working a 9-5 seemingly unimportant job. Maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom who feels that nothing she is doing is big or purposeful or worthwhile. Maybe you are an empty nester who feels that her life has passed her by and she has nothing left to offer.

May I encourage you today? Nothing you do is ever mundane, unimportant, or useless if it is what God has called you to do. Every aspect of our day-to-day work is carrying with it eternal implications. And it is when you are faithful to the task at hand, right here, right now, right in front of you, that even bigger things begin to happen.

Remember, friend - our God is in the details and is working everything in your life together in such a way that you might fulfill the amazing kingdom purposes He created you to fulfill. Keep your eyes fixed on Him and be faithful right here, right now. He will do the rest.

  1. Rebekah, tonight I am grateful to read these words: "Every aspect of our day-to-day work is carrying with it eternal implications." Every aspect, eternal implications. Amen! May we not forget this truth. Blessings!
