Look up!

I read a disturbing news story the other day. Evidently there is a rise in young people growing bone spurs at the base of the skull above the neck. The suspicion is that it is caused by them looking down at their cell phones too much. While the article specifically mentioned young people, I don't think constantly looking down at our cell phones is limited to one age group. I'm guilty of doing so at times. This article made me wonder how much of life and beauty and wonder we are missing while our heads are down, absorbed with the little screen in our hand.

"Take a good look at God's wonders-they'll take your breath away." says Psalm 66:5 in The Message Bible. I thought of the above mentioned news article after reading this verse. God created this beautiful world for our enjoyment. How grievous it must be to His heart when we are so absorbed with anything-from our cell phones, to our "just keeping my nose to the grindstone" jobs, to life's problems that have our heads hanging down with heaviness-to notice all of the wonder He made for us. When we look at God's wonders it puts our life and its challenges into perspective. We see God for Who He is-His omnipotence, His magnificence, His loving care for us-when we take a good look at His handiwork in creation.

You don't have even have to leave home to take a good look at God's wonders, (although a walk by the sea is, in my opinion, pretty much a cure-all for everything). The little dimples in your toddler"s hands that will, all too soon, disappear when knuckles form in their place-what a wonder! That seed you planted in your backyard which became the tomatoes you are eating on your B.L.T. sandwich-what a wonder! Your own face in the mirror looking back at you, (Goodness! I have my mama's eyes!)-what a wonder! I want to look up, to look away from all that hinders me from noticing, and to take a good look at God's wonders all around me. I've heard that the view will take your breath away.

  1. Elizabeth, I heard the same thing on the news and it is disturbing. May we "look up" and not miss what He has placed all around us. Have a blessed Sunday!

  2. God is the only one who can create true beauty. Our attempts are only a shadow. I love watching birds fly, one of his finest creations I think.

  3. Your post reminds me of something I saw as I mowed the yard yesterday. We have a burn pit way out to the back. As I mowed, I saw something that looked colorful among the junk that is thrown in there to be burned. It was a pretty varied color snapdragon flower growing among the ashes. I thought how awesome God that your beauty is even planted among the ugly mess of that burn pit. There is also a white one too. Seed spreading from somewhere, I guess, as there are no flower beds that far back of the houses. God's beauty certainly is everywhere. :)

    1. I love that! It’s like God’s beauty is persistent to be seen even in the midst of ugliness.
