His Peace

by Debi Baker

This world is in such turmoil.  There is chaos everywhere we turn.  If I don't agree with you, then I'm wrong.  There are more people today that suffer from issues of anxiety and depression than ever before.  Almost no one has any respect for the law or government!  How did we get where we are?

I'll tell you, we got where we are because people all over the world decided that life is all about "me."  The prevailing attitude today seems to be, "What can you do for me?  How can you make me happy?"  What happened to being kind just for the sake of being kind?  What happened to holding the door open for the person behind us as we leave the store?  What happened to smiling at someone?

Yesterday, I nearly pulled out in front of a car.  There is a utility pole that sits in an awkward place and the oncoming car was hidden by this pole.  As soon as I started to pull out, here he came.  I immediately stepped on my brake so I didn't make him slam on his brakes.  He looked at me like I did it intentionally.  I mouthed "sorry" and thought no more about it...until we got to the stop light just down the way.  He put his arm out the window and gave me the flying gesture that is so rude!  I was so angry.  I was embarrassed.  I wanted to yell at him.  I wanted to crawl into a hole.  I knew why he was doing it, but no one else at the intersection did.

Seriously, he didn't have to slam on his brakes.  He didn't have to swerve.  Why did he feel it necessary to respond like that?  Well, I would say that he probably doesn't have any peace!  This world is so busy looking for answers and avoiding them at the same time.  No one has peace.  Bills pile up.  School has us wound up.  All work and no play makes us so frustrated.  Sometimes I think we just need to shut the world down...put it on pause just so we can take a breath!

Jesus said in John 14:27 KJV, "27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."  If we really want to get hold of this life; if we really want to have peace, we just need to turn to Jesus.  He is our peace.  He has the cure for what ails us.  There's no need for us to be afraid or troubled.  Turn to Jesus and let Him turn your chaos into peace!

Have a blessed day!

  1. One kids and I came out of the grocery store and got into our little Honda. I am always very careful to hold the doors when they get in, especially if cars are parked near ours. There was a giagantic white SUV parked next to us. Once we got in and were ready to go, I noticed the lady in the SUV motioning to me to roll down my window.

I assumed it was one of the moms from church or something. She said I hit her car with my door. I knew I hadn't. She insisted I had and then explained she was driving a government vehicle and so I had actually hit MY car because my tax money would have to fix the car. There were no marks on her car on my side. I thought she must have just heard a sound and assumed I'd dinged it.

Anyway, this went on for a few minutes, then she started to pull away. She did not call the police or check for damage like I would have expected. As she pulled away, I waved to her and said, "God bless you." I meant it, though I probably sounded like I thought she was crazy, which may be why she screamed at me, "You too, B*TCH!"

Ugh. I am a nice person and that hit me hard. Worse, my kids asked me why that woman was yelling at me. We drove away too, in the other direction, and went to an ice cream place to sit. My heart was pounding. We prayed for her. We went home and I prayed for her by myself too. It was hard. I was really unnerved, so I prayed a gotcha prayer. You know, God, let her know when she is blessed it's because of that LADY IN THE PARKING LOT WHO IS TOTALLY GREAT...uh, not a good way to pray, shows my heart... I was angry. Sigh. Anyway, prayed until my heart softened because the Lord told me to forgive. I did. Eventually.

That guy needs prayer. You need to forgive because it's a weight you are not meant to carry.

    It wasn't your fault.

One time...when I was a teenager I flipped off a man in a pick-up truck because his dog was unsafely in the back. He didn't deserve it either.

People are...well, what are we? In need. All of us.
