Comforting One Another

By: Shari A. Miller

I don't know about you, but sometimes when the trials of life hit hard, I shut down. I feel as if no one needs to hear about my problems once again, so I keep it between me and God, and sometimes I don't even talk to God about it. Oh how naive I can be.

Why oh why do we feel as if we need to go it all alone?

  • When hard times strike we first and foremost need to take them to our Savior. There is such a difference between flying solo, as compared to letting God fly the plane. When I surrender, I'm surrounded with peace and comfort, and the knowledge that God will work all things out for my good.
  • Secondly, we need to share with others how God is comforting us through our troubles.

In 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 Paul wrote,

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort."

God's Word commands us to help those in trouble. It doesn't say to hide what God has done for us, it says to share how God has comforted us so that we in turn can be an example and comfort others.

It's time to take off our masks and let who we truly are shine through.  We need to be open and honest with each other. We need to be willing to share the good, the bad and the ugly. Most importantly, it's time to share how God brings us through these things. It's time to let His light shine through us and touch others so they in turn can be comforted by Him.

It's time to stop the madness of solitude. It's time to be real. It's time to spread light.

Instead of going it all alone, let's invite others along on our journey and walk the road of life together as we follow Him.

  2. Shari, I'm learning that when I share the comfort God has given me, I'm comforted twice! The second time is when I see God use the comfort He gave me the first time to comfort someone else. Thanks for opening your heart today.

  3. This is such important truth, to be willing to let others help and comfort us and to be there to support and comfort others. Your photo is a perfect pairing with this scripture.
