Cherish Every Moment

By: Shari A. Miller

Moments....

They slip through our fingers like sand.

If we are not intentional with how we use every moment, they will get washed away, never to be seen again. Memories will be lost, and tasks left unfulfilled, if we don't learn to treasure the gift of life that God has given us.

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:" ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1

God has used this past month to remind me how true this verse is.

My precious mother, has been fighting Alzheimer's for the last two years. Within these past few weeks, her condition has worsened. Words don't come as easy any more, names and faces often elude her, and her eyes often drift away to a time of days gone bye.

My baby girl has been preparing for a new adventure as she starts college again and moves out on her own. It seems like yesterday, that I was teaching her ABC's and 123's.

No matter how much we would like to stop time, we can't. The ticking of the clock continues, and the hands move forever forward with each new day.

Each morning you wake up, spend time with the Lord, and ask him how he wants you to use your days, so that he could be glorified. Don't let time be used up with meaningless tasks, seize each day to the fullest with laughter and joy. Don't let the here and now slip away without breathing deep, and drinking in it's beauty and grace.

From this day forward, live the life God has given you, and live it well, cherishing each moment every step of the way.

  2. Yes, they moments are important. I wish I had know that when I was younger. I prayed for you and your mother -- and the girl spreading her wings. I'm facing the empty nest this year. Not easy! Thank you for planning this party for us! ~Pamela

  3. Praying for you each and all. I cared for my mother for fifteen years as she struggled with dementia, diabetes, and finally cancer. I am so grateful that I had those years with her even though they often were so hard. Every moment, each hug, each word of gratitude from her is etched upon my heart. I am grateful.

  4. Oh, Shari! My heart just goes out to you SO much. I surely know, to a degree, how you feel. I lost my precious mother in 2012, and I miss her more than words. Even though your dear Mom may not be able to recall who you are or how much you mean to her, she will understand the meaning of the love inside your hugs. She looks like such a dear, sweet lady. I know you miss her...already. And I know you will miss your dear daughter as she leaves you...what a sad, difficult season of life for you. May God wrap His loving arms around you and hold you close to Him. As chapters close, He will faithfully open new ones and fill them with His comfort for you.

  5. So very sorry to read about your mother's struggle with Alzheimer's. My grandmother has been battling it for several years now and it's heart-breaking. I'm walking in my local Alzheimer's Walk in a few weeks, and your mother will be in my prayers as I walk.
