Does God Trip Over You?

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about being a follower of God, and I used my dog as an example.  This dog follows me everywhere.  If I take a step, he takes a step - where I go, he goes.  A couple days ago, as I was tripping over my dog for the hundredth time, God took the opportunity to teach me more about following Him.

God wants us to follow Him like my dog follows me.  Where He goes, we go.  Where He stays, we stay.  We are to be completely devoted to Him.  Not our will, but His.  This is the kind of follower that God desires.

But there is another kind of follower.  The kind that thinks they have God figured out.  I have a cat like this.  This cat isn't about following, he's about leading.  He tries to anticipate my next move, and then runs ahead of me to get there first.  I trip over him because he is running right in front of me, trying to lead the way.  I don't find this to be amusing.

God doesn't find it amusing either.

The Bible says that His ways are not our ways, neither are His thoughts like our thoughts.  God's character never changes, but the ways He chooses to move does change.  Just about the time we think we have Him figured out, He does something completely different.  God doesn't want us to try to anticipate His next move.  No matter how hard we try, we can't figure Him out.

Are you a follower or does God trip over you as you rush ahead of Him?

  1. Oh Lisa, this is so good :) I'm sure I have frustrated God in both my reluctance to follow and my hastiness to lead at times.

  2. Lisa,

On my, I can't tell you how many times I have tried to figure God out, but if we could figure God out, if we cold anticipate what He is going to do, if we think we can lead better than He can, well then we would have no need for God would we. God is God and we are not.

    Blesings to you.

  3. Wow! This is a great post. I am sure I have upset God in this. I try to anticipate His next move and rush ahead, when I should simply be following His lead. Thank you for this.

  4. I want to follow God. I never want to try to lead as I know I would make a mess of everything. What a great God we have! He knows the way and I want to follow Him. Thanks for a great post.

    Blessings to you.

  5. Hi Lisa - I love what you say about not trying to anticipate God's next move. I've done that so many times to my detriment and to the detriment of my peace. Lovely post
    God bless

  6. Lisa, this is such a great visual reminder for me. I am too often getting ahead of God and making bad choices in the process. Thank you for this post!

  7. Love the visual reminder! I have been known to be more cat-like than dog in this aspect!

  8. Lisa, I missed this post yesterday! (Work gets in the way of keeping up ;)) Great post and our minds are definitely thinking along the same lines! So to sum up...we need to be more like dogs and less like cats!
