Obedience Produces Peace

 By: Grace Metzger

I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will
have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.
John 16:33

Recently it's seemed like the storms will never stop. As soon as my family gets past one thing another worse thing pops up. I've always joked that my family was cursed, because there is always something that goes wrong with us. So when my church started a text group between a few girls about what fruit of the spirit they are focusing on for that week it was not a surprise to me that the first thing that popped to mind was peace. Peace always sounds so simple but actually having true peace in your life is so incredibly difficult.

Come to terms with God and be at peace;
in this way good will come to you.
Job 22:21

The biggest storm I've had is one that I've kept quiet. My doctor told me that because the scans I had last month show that one of my tumors grew, he wanted me to have a very big surgery. Before we can schedule the surgery, he requires that I have a meeting with him to talk about the surgery. The only time they had available was a month after I got the news. Waiting that month was awful and I spent the whole time full of nerves and anxiety. The day finally came to go to the appointment only for them to reschedule it. So I waited again and tried with no success to calm down. The appointment came and yet again they reschedule it to two months later. I am still waiting for this appointment. Because of this mess, peace has seemed like such a foreign concept that I can't even remember what it feels like.

I will both lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, Lord, make Me live in safety.
Psalm 4:8

I wanted peace, I wanted to be able to go through this season of waiting and fear with a peace that triumphs over every negative emotions that tries to take over my mind. So I did the only possible thing I could do and started researching what the Bible says on peace. To no surprise the Bible says quite a lot about this topic. My favorite one is in Isiah 32:7, it says "The result of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever."

The results of my righteousness is peace. God literally told us how to get peace in one verse! Being obedient to God, following His commandments and laws, and living life for Him will result in peace. As humans, our first thought might have been something like, "But I'm already doing all of that yet I still don't have peace!" Although I'm not proud of that thought, it did show me something about myself. Was I attempting to do all of that, being obedient to God's laws and living my life for Him? I probably was but I wasn't doing it for the right reasons.

I think about how Jesus was called the Prince of Peace and how what He did that is different from me. He was obedient out of love, while I was obedient to get something in return. Jesus had true obedience and true obedience produces true peace.

The Lord gives His people strength;
the Lord blesses His people with peace.
Isiah 32:17

When you are truly following God's commands you are becoming His people, you are creating a closer bond between you and God. With this closer bond you learn to trust Him no matter what, you know that you are God's child and He will take care of you, you don't fear the storm cause you know that He is there with you.

The answer to peace is becoming obedient, it’s trusting God that He will take care of you, trusting God that no matter how long you wait in the storm you will be ok cause you are in His arms. Are you looking to find peace? Are you trying to figure out how to survive this hard season you're in? Calm down, don't freak out instead continue being obedient and remember God is with you! Everything else will fall in place. Once you start doing that you will feel a peace unlike any other, I promise you.

  1. Oh my goodness, I can't believe your doctor would do that to you! That's terrible. But then I have to wonder how serious can it be if they keep pushing it off? No wonder you lack peace. But your outlook is incredible and you're definitely focused on the right bible verses. I'll be praying for you!
