Season of Singleness

 By: Grace Metzger

Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself
has said, I will never leave you or abandon you.
Hebrews 13:5

When I first started writing for Woman to Woman one of the first things someone told me was "You can write about being single!" I won't lie I laughed at this suggestion, being grateful during your season of singleness wasn't something I pictured myself talking to others about. But this week I was talking to one of my newly single co workers. He was upset about spending his first Valentine’s Day alone. We talked about the this topic for a while and I started realizing just how deeply this affects others.

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for
I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you.
Isaiah 41:10

In four days we celebrate Valentine’s Day, the day where everyone celebrates love. This time is where everybody gets to show their significant other how much they love and appreciate them. But when you don't have a significate other, whether you just lost that person, you just broke up, or you've never had one, it can be a sore topic for some. One of the main complaints I've heard about this holiday is that it reminds everyone how alone they are. But as Christians we are completely and totally blessed in the fact that we are aware that we are not alone. God is with us, God loves us, and God comforts us. We are never alone.

But what about non believers? What about the people who don't know that God is with them? What do they do to deal with this? One of the solutions I've seen people do is they rush into any relationship as soon as they can. Afraid of being alone, they jump at the chance to be with someone, it doesn't matter if they truly have feelings for that person, if that person is compatible with them, or most importantly, it doesn't matter if that person is the right person for them.

Now if you haven't discovered it yet, I am single. But I've watched so many people I care about fall into this same trap over and over again, watched as they got hurt because they were chasing after people God didn't intend for them to be with just so that way they're not alone.

There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every
activity under heaven, a time to give birth and a time to die;
a time to plant and a time to uproot; a time to kill and a time
to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build; a time to weep
and a time to laugh.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

I love this verse in Ecclesiastes because it's a great remainder that it's okay not to be at the same place as everyone, it's ok to go through a hard season, and most importantly it might be hard now but there is a time for joy. During this Valentine’s Day you might see others your age, or maybe even younger than you, celebrating it with others. But this isn't your season and that's okay! God is here with you, He will sit with you and wait with you until it is your season! So don't rush things, don't worry about the future, and don't get upset that you aren't in a certain season yet. Instead be grateful for the season you are in currently, God has a lot of good things planned for that season I know it!

Discussion Questions!
1.) What are your plans this Valentine's Day?
2.) Do you find yourself struggling with the seasons you are currently in?

  1. Grace, this is such an encouraging post for singles. May this day be one in which we all reach out to someone who is alone - those who are young and single; those who are widowed, those whose spouses are in the military, those who may be in loveless marriages. Thank you for this reminder!
