God is in This Place...Do You Know It?

"Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, 'Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.'”

~Genesis 28:16

Many are probably familiar with the biblical account of Jacob being on a journey to Laban’s house when he camps out under the stars one night and dreams his famous “stairway to heaven” dream.

This part of the story always jumps off the page at me, though: “When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.’”

How often are we guilty of the same thing?

If there is one word that Christians overly (and I would actually say wrongly!) use, it is the word “mundane”. When I was in the middle of writing a book for moms back in 2017, I looked up the actual definition of the word “mundane” and ended up starting the #nomoremundane campaign on Instagram as a result of what I discovered. The word mundane refers to something which is dull, unimportant, and pertaining merely to earthly life as opposed to something heavenly or eternal. It’s therefore then actually a word that does not apply to any aspect of our lives if we understand the truth that God is everywhere and using every aspect of our lives to further His kingdom plan.

He is in the traffic on your commute to work.

He is in the place where you do laundry.

He is in your midst as you break up sibling fights.

He is there when you are schooling your children or helping with homework.

He is in that place when you are cleaning the bathroom, making dinner, or mopping the kitchen floor.

He is there as you grieve the losses from the past few years.

He is there as you experience fear over what the future might hold.

There is no mundane aspect of your life when you remember that God is in this place and He is working in and through you all the time.

Open your eyes and know. He is here with you now.

Reflection Questions:

1) Do you usually tend to remember that God is with you right where you are? Why or why not?

2) How can you be more mindful of that truth?

3) How can you gain strength and encouragement from that fact?

  1. Oh, Rebekah! This is so good. God is with us even in the mundane. The mundane can be glorious! ♥
