Where's the Light?

 By: Joanne Viola

The other night, I was suddenly struck with how dark it had become. I had not looked at the clock, was unaware as to the time, and thought it was much later. To look at the clock and discover the actual and correct time, was surprising to me. Several questions went through my mind:

  • Was it this dark yesterday at this time?
  • When did it become so dark so early?
  • How had I missed the progression of darkness?

Seriously. Have you ever noticed that we are not aware of how dark it is until the light is gone?

Romans 1:21 tells us something about this process:

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks,
but they became futile in their speculations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.
(NASB)

The people that Paul is speaking about knew God. But their problem was that they were not glorifying Him as God. In other words, they would not worship Him as God. Neither would they give Him thanks.

And so began the process in their hearts. Their thinking became foolish. Their thoughts about God became confused. Their minds went dark.

“An unthankful heart eventually becomes dark.”

(Albert Lindsey).

If ever you wanted to know the importance of gratitude, here is one reason we want to cultivate an attitude of gratitude.

An attitude of gratitude keeps the light on in our hearts.

So, with that said, what are you grateful for today?

    1. Amen. Deborah, His loving kindness towards us is something we cannot fully grasp.

  2. I had a very similar experience last week when I noticed it was dark around 7. I thought, "When did that happen?" I hadn't noticed the progression (or regression?) of the days gradually getting shorter. What an apt analogy for a heart that grows dark, unaware.

  3. Barbara, I so appreciate that the example resonated with you as well. It does happen unaware. May we keep the light on in our hearts, diligently staying in God's Word, and maintaining a grateful heart.
