In the Midst of Change, Behold Our Unchanging God

By: Donna Bucher

Welcome to my absolute favorite season, autumn! At 9:04 pm (EDT) on September 22nd, the astronomical beginning of autumn arrived officially in the northern hemisphere.

Ideally, the sun would be directly overhead as seen from a specific point on the equator in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Hence the name "Autumnal Equinox", duplicated again in March for the Vernal Equinox.

However, a bit of an oversimplification, manmade factors of shifting our clocks, atmospheric refraction and your position on the earth affects the exact minutes for complete equinox.

In fact, where I live the equal daylight and darkness actually occurred 3 days later.

While it seems simple, the process is as complex as it is fascinating, truly giving testimony to our Creator God's power and majesty.

But not only those magnificent traits, but His everlasting faithfulness and unchanging nature. For though seasons, situations, and even people change, God never changes.

El Olam-Everlasting God

Recently in my devotional time I spent time meditating on one of God's names, "El Olam" which means "everlasting God". In a time when we face the transition of seasons, and perhaps many other life transitions and changes we can rest in El Olam; knowing He is the God who is, who was and who is to come (Revelation 1:8and remains the same yesterday, today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

In moments of transition, change, or instability, cling to these truths about the God who never changes:

·        He is the God of everlasting strength (Isaiah 26:4)

·        He is the God of everlasting kindness (Isaiah 54:8)

·        He is the God of everlasting Joy (Isaiah 61:7)

·        He is the God of everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3)

·        He is the God of everlasting mercy (Psalm 100:5)

·        He is the God of everlasting righteousness (Psalm 119:142)

·        He is the God of everlasting light (Isaiah 60:20)

·        He is the God of everlasting salvation (Isaiah45:17)

Why not celebrate the arrival of the Autumnal Equinox by meditating on these attributes of God, asking him to reveal more of His nature to you in this new season.

If you are in a hard place of transition or change, this is my prayer for you,

"O El Olam, I praise you as the everlasting God, who is the same yesterday, today and forever. Wrap my sweet Friend in your unfailing and unchanging love today, in the swirl of change and uncertainty. May she know in the midst of life's fragility, you are everlasting strength and the everlasting arms holding all things together. Help her to cling to you, as you bring peace to heart, mind, soul, and life's situations right now. Amen."

Which one of God’s everlasting traits speaks most deeply to you right now?

How does knowing the everlasting nature of God bring you comfort in turbulent times?
