God is not Angered by Your Grief

"Jesus wept."

 ~John 11:35

Sometimes we have such a thwarted view of God’s sovereignty that we think that to actually grieve or lament anything sad the Lord allows to happen in our lives is to sinfully fight against His sovereign hand.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

The same God Who took the time to weep with two grieving sisters mere moments before He rose their brother from the grave is the same God Who tenderly comforted me when my husband was away on deployment for 7 months and I was grieving missed birthdays, missed holidays, and lonely nights spent wondering if my husband would return to me safely.

And you know what? He never once rebuked me in that grief. He never made me feel as if I needed to just suck it up because He was going to bring good from the deployment (He certainly did bring much good from it, but that good that made me thankful for the deployment in the long run didn’t negate the hardship of having my person 6,000 miles away for 30 weeks in a row).

He’s the same God Who grieves with you when you receive the scary diagnosis, when your much-prayed-for baby is miscarried, when your marriage is broken, when you lose your home and all your sentimental possessions to fire or flood, when your biggest fears come to pass.

He may be sovereign and He may be in control, but He isn’t cold. He isn’t hard-hearted. He isn’t unfeeling or vindictive or harsh.

He’s tender. He’s near. He’s upholding His promise to bring good from anything and everything that touches His children. He’s compassionate. And He’s grieving with you.

So the next time you feel like grieving or lamenting? Go ahead and do so, friend. Your caring, empathetic, sovereign, tender God is ready and willing to grieve right alongside you.
