Read for Inspiration, Guidance & Wisdom

 By: Joanne Viola

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NASB)

This one Scripture has been stuck in my thoughts for days now. More like two weeks. It’s been turned to and read over and over each day. The verse began to take on meaning:

  1. God’s Word is meant to have effect on our lives. It does a work on our souls (personalities), our spirits (the immortal part of us), and the joints and marrow (the deepest inner parts of us). This means Scripture goes deeper and deeper into every part of our thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
  2. God’s Word judges our thoughts and intentions. God is the only One who can judge fairly, and rightly, and justly, and with grace. We can trust ourselves to Him, and also need to leave the judging of others to Him.

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
(2 Timothy 3:16-17, NASB)

God’s desire is to equip us to do a good work and in order to do so, we need to be in His Word on a daily basis. His Word will bring three things to us as we read and apply His Word to our lives:

  • Inspiration. It was people, much like we are, who recorded the words we hold in our hands called Bibles. God inspired them by His Holy Spirit to write the words He moved on their hearts and minds. It has been given without error. God inspired each author and He brings inspiration to our lives as well as we read His written word.
  • Revelation. Everything God wanted us to know has been written in His Word. While the writing of His Word has ceased, His Word is eternal. It is alive and working in every generation that will ever be.
  • Enlightenment or Illumination. As we read Scripture, God provides direction and guidance and wisdom for our daily lives.

May we get into God’s Word each day, letting it do its work in our lives.
It is where we will be inspired to be our best selves,
come to know God as He reveals Himself to us,
and find guidance and wisdom for our journey.

Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” (Psalm 119:18, NLT)
