Choosing Servanthood

By: Jenifer Metzger

So Jesus called them together and said,
“You
know that the rulers in this world lord
it over
their people, and officials flaunt their
authority
over those under them. But among
you it will
be different. Whoever wants to be
a leader among
you must be your servant,
and whoever wants to be
first among you
must be the slave of everyone else.
Mark 10:42-44

The world we live in tells us to put ourselves first. That we are important and should be treated as such. We are taught how to gain attention, gain followers, do things that matter, "glow up", and more. Every day we are faced with someone telling us to put ourselves first.

Now please hear me. You do matter. You are important. You must take care of yourself. Those are all truths. But here is another truth, a Biblical truth: we must be servants.

Jesus even goes as far to tell us in Mark that to be a leader -the NIV says, "whoever wants to become great ..."- that we must be servants. Servanthood was so important to Jesus that in John 13 Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, washed the disciples feet.

Choosing servanthood isn't always easy. Especially when we are bombarded with people telling us not to serve.

But it is a choice we must make, a choice that our Heavenly Father honors, a choice that brings glory to His name.

Choosing servanthood looks different for every person and every situation. This week my daughter spent her day off, a day she could have been relaxing or doing housework or even taking her toddler to the park, sitting at the doctor's office with me. She sat alone in a waiting room for hours. She was being a servant.

Servanthood can be letting someone go before you in line, or paying for the person behind you in line. It can be babysitting -for free- so a single parent can have a day off. It can be buying groceries or making a meal for someone in need. Mowing the lawn for an elderly neighbor. Doing the laundry for a new mama. There are so many ways to serve others.

Today, choose servanthood. What will you do to serve someone?

  1. jenifer I ove your call to servanthood, yes we DO matter, but I have found if I serve others my needs are always met. Sharing a blog post with my personal psalm of praise I wrote as an acrostic with each of the 26 letters of the English alphabet. https://serenityinsuffering.com/a-heart-of-lavish-praise-for-god/
