Enjoying Slow Moments in Advent

BySarah Geringer

"Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

Psalm 46:10 NLT

One of the busiest seasons of the year is now upon us. To cultivate peace in the middle of this season, we need to choose slow moments.

Being mindful in a slow moment helps you connect with God. Mindfulness is taking time to be present with the Lord and thank him for the surrounding blessings, no matter how small they may be.

A few years ago, I wrote about taking a slow moment with God in December, and you can read it HERE. I also want to offer you more ways to be still and know that God is real in your life throughout this busy season. Here are practical tips for you:

1. Pause with God while you sip your morning drink. Whether you have coffee, tea, hot cocoa, water, milk or juice, enjoy it with the Lord. Take notice of its temperature and how it feels on your tongue. Just slowing down for ten seconds can help you praise God for his goodness to you.

2. Invite God alongside while you do your chores. Whether you are washing dishes, folding laundry, scrubbing the bathroom or something else, use the moment to pay attention to the blessings hidden in it. Thank God for hot water, electricity, appliances, cleaning fluids and more.

3. Meditate on God's Word while you look at Christmas lights. So many of us appreciate the warmth and brightness of our Christmas trees and outdoor lights in this dark season. While you take in the beauty of the lights, praise Jesus for being the light of the world for you (John 8:12), and calling you to be a light for his glory (Matt. 5:14-16).

4. Savor a treat with the Lord. The treats of this season are meant to be savored. When you grab a cookie, candy or piece of fruit, take a moment to savor it in God's presence. Praise him for making food so delightful for your senses. Thank him for the people who are involved in producing food for you.

5. Take in the scents of the season with God. What scent do you savor most during this season? You can pause to enjoy the scents of fresh gingerbread, pine boughs, scented candles, diffused oils and crackling fires with him. He considers our prayers sweet incense (Ps. 141:2), so why not enjoy the scent in his presence?

I pray that you will be still and enjoy many slow moments with God during Advent. Here's a prayer to encourage you:

Father God,

I praise you for being present in every moment with me.

I thank you for the gift of Advent.

Too often, I have rushed through this season in the past.

But this year, I ask you to help me be still and know that you are God.

In many ordinary moments, help me to be mindful.

May I count small blessings as great treasures in your presence.

May I learn to appreciate you more with a heightened engagement of my senses.

May my choice to be mindful cultivate greater peace that I can share with others.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
