Worth More Than Anything

But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ." ~Philippians 3:7-8

Even though I have read this passage from Philippians 3 a number of times, this section in particular stood out to me anew the other day, especially in light of 2020 being deemed “the year of the Bible”.

So often, we as women lament that we are too busy to be in the Word. But, here’s the deal - being a student of the Word is the single most important pursuit of our entire lives. Why? Because it is primarily through His Word that you come to know Christ and Who He truly is. And that then impacts every single other area of your life - "All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17)."

In the verses leading up to these two in Philippians 3, Paul had been chronicling all the many accomplishments, accolades, and reasons he had to boast in himself. And then he says they are all as dung in comparison to the ultimate most important thing of knowing Christ.

This means then, friend, that knowing the Lord (i.e. being in His Word and experiencing intimacy with Him through prayer) is far more important than your accomplishing everything on today’s to-do list.

It’s far more important than accomplishing every goal you are setting out to achieve in 2020.

It’s more important than building up a social media platform of folks who will be enthralled by all your great Bible knowledge.

It’s more important than “making” your dream happen of publishing a book, running a marathon, buying a house, or traveling the country.

It’s even more important than having a perfectly spotless house or Ivy-league destined children.

Nothing is more important than knowing Christ. It is through that knowledge that we become equipped for every other area of our lives.

So, what will it be, friend? What changes need to be made in your daily schedule in light of this truth? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. "Nothing is more important than knowing Christ. It is through that knowledge that we become equipped for every other area of our lives." This, this spoke volumes to me. So many times I have let my quiet time lapse due to busyness only to find myself in a downward spiral. It is being in His word that keeps me grounded and ready for the busyness. I wrote this week about the importance of date night in marriage, https://keepingthetiethatbinds.com/2020/08/20/keeping-date-night-essential-in-marriage/
