When You Are Forgetful

By: Sarah Geringer

It's been a forgetful week for me. That's unusual for this Type A perfectionist.

I call myself a recovering perfectionist, because I try not to beat myself up anymore when I'm forgetful, i.e. imperfect.

I forgot to write this blog post ahead of time and schedule it to post early on Friday morning, though I've written for this site for over two years.

I also forgot to post a Facebook linkup post that I've done every Friday for 18 months.

Not to mention, I forgot to post in three other places where I have a regular rhythm going.

It's not that I was being lazy. I just got caught up in life - errands, making dinner, my son's baseball games - you know, the regular stuff of life we all experience.

The older I get, the more I realize that if things don't get written down, they don't get accomplished. And all the things above didn't get written on my to-do list, so they didn't get done.

I have a choice today. Will I berate myself for being forgetful, or make the best out of the rest of this day?

It's after 10:30 a.m. now, and I debated on whether to write this post or let it go. But I sense that many of you also struggle with being forgetful, and you need some encouragement today. So here I am in my imperfect, forgetful state.

I'm meditating on these verses for comfort today:

Can a mother forget her nursing child?
Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?
But even if that were possible,
    I would not forget you!
16 See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.

Isaiah 49:15-16a NLT

Our God is never forgetful.

He is perfect in every way.

Even when I forget, he's there to help me regroup and start over.

He doesn't judge or condemn me for being imperfect and forgetting things from time to time.

God loves us so much that he never forgets us.

That's a huge comfort to me, when I'm tempted to condemn myself for forgetting.

If you're down on yourself for being forgetful, meditate on this comforting passage of Isaiah today. God loves you as his precious child. He never forgets you. He's remembering things even if you forget.

Turn right back to him when you're forgetful, and receive the grace and love he holds for you in his hands. Then get back on track with his help.

In which area do you most struggle with forgetfulness? How can this passage of Scripture help you experience God's grace?

  1. Sarah, it's funny you mention forgetfulness. Someone this past week mentioned that in these days, where normal isn't the normal, things seem to slip through the cracks. It's wonderful to remember our God never forgets. He always remembers us even when we may forget Him at times. Blessings!

  2. Oh Sarah, my forgetfulness has been the seed of many funny stories. I font mean to forget, but if I don't write it down, I just might. And then life gets busy. It took me years to learn to laugh at my forgetfulness, but now it sure beats chiding myself.

  3. I struggle getting out the door every morning. I forget or can't find my phone, keys, watch, or purse..or all of the above. I get so frustrated and tend to beat myself up. I carried a planner for years, I know if you put things in the same place every night, they are likely to be there in the morning. None of it happens and I go through the scenario tooooo often. But I know God and my family still and always will love me anyway.
