His Grace Is Greater

By: Joanne Viola

Let’s continue our trek to Jerusalem with this Psalm 129, the tenth song of ascents. Here we find ourselves reminded the journey will not always be easy but that we have been promised strength to overcome.
  • We may know and experience adversity, but those who wage against us will not have victory over us. The Lord fights for us.
“From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me, but they have never defeated me.” (Psalm 129:2, NLT)
  • God is faithful to His many promises and brings us freedom and safety.
“But the Lord is good, he has cut me free from the ropes of the ungodly.” (verse 4)
  • Our enemies, and those who seek to cause us harm, will be turned back in shame and not gain over us.
“May all who hate Jerusalem be turned back in shameful defeat.” (verse 5)

As we see how God has stood with His people down through the ages, we can find assurance that God will stand with His people today.
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession of Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:14). No matter how fierce spiritual warfare is, Christians are always led victoriously by God.”
(Holman Old Testament Commentary, Vol. 12, page 296)
God will continue to give His people grace to overcome.
This is the assurance we will always have.
His grace is greater!

  1. Oh, how we need this reminder in these times. We never stand alone. God always stands with us!

  2. I don't remember if it was this psalm in particular, but a former pastor pointed out once that often the men traveled to Jerusalem while the wives stayed home when children were young (like Hannah did). These verses of protection in the psalms of ascent would have meant so much, not only in the face of Israel's many enemies, but in trusting God to care for those on the road and those at home.
