The Value of Scripture Writing

By: Sarah Geringer

Do you know how Scripture writing can benefit your faith?

I started writing out Scripture last year and learned the benefits. Every morning, I read my One Year Bible. I kept a little notebook with my Bible where I wrote down one or two meaningful verses from each reading.

This simple exercise took only a few minutes per day, yet made a powerful difference. I noticed that compared to the verses I read, the verses I wrote out stayed with me longer. I could pull them up from memory when I was praying or conversing with others. The written verses also helped me stop my sinful thoughts and get back on a God-pleasing thought track.

Scientists have discovered that we have a 40 percent better memory retention rate when we write something down. Your brain strengthens the neural pathway developed when you read a verse by sending a message to your hand, telling it to write the verse. It's one of the easiest and best ways to meditate on God's Word and begin memorizing it too.

When you review the verses you wrote the day before, you strengthen your memory even more. If you've ever wanted to know the Bible more, include it in your conversations with others, and incorporate it into your prayers, Scripture writing is an excellent way to start.

I encourage you to try Scripture writing this week. Every day, write down one verse from your Bible reading. Watch how God uses it to bless your faith in multiple ways! Also, if you are looking for a Scripture writing plan for the Lenten season, check out my resource HERE. I'm also hosting a free guided meditation and Scripture writing plan through the entire book of Psalms in 2020. You can find all the information HERE.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the marvelous way you created my brain to work.
Thank you for the precious gift of your Word.
I want to hide your Word in my heart and mind this year.
Help me be intentional in my study, meditation and memorization, Lord.
When I write verses out, enable them to have greater sticking power in me.
I thank you in advance for the way Scripture writing will bless my faith.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

  1. Sarah, I would agree with you that writing something out always helps me to retain it. It's amazing the difference it makes in my life as well.

    1. Thanks Joanne! Whether it's a grocery list, sermon notes, or a Bible verse, it sticks with me much better when I write it down.
