If You Feel Like Giving Up...

By: Sarah Geringer

Do you feel like giving up today?

At this time of year, so many people have already given up on their resolutions. Winter blues may be pressing down on you, and we're still not through with the grey skies, snow and ice yet. It's hard to hang on to hope when momentum dries up.

You may be struggling with other temptations to give up too. Prayers that seem to go unanswered for weeks, months or years. Job situations that test your resolve. Family issues that repeat in worn-out cycles. I know...I've been there on all of those.

By meditating on a key scripture, you can keep on keeping on with greater faith.
I chose this scripture as my meditation verse of the year, and it's helped me every day of January. I hope it will help you too.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9 NLT

You WILL reap a harvest if you don't give up! I remember a sermon that Dr. Charles Stanley preached on this principle years ago. He said that we reap what we sow, more than we sow, later than we sow. It's a law of the universe that God put in motion, and it can give us great hope and joy.

We reap WHAT we sow. Just like in a garden, if you plant carrot seeds, you get carrots, not lettuce. If you plant good habits, you'll reap good things. But if you give up now, you'll have nothing to reap later.

We reap MORE than we sow. A sunflower plant starts out as a single seed, but one large flower produces hundreds of seeds. Start with small habits, prayers, or faithfulness now, and you'll see major growth in the future.

We reap LATER than we sow. No gardener or farmer can have an immediate harvest. Growth takes time, patience and nurture. Your hopes, dreams, prayers and obedient steps will take time, but you are guaranteed to see results in the future.

If you turn to God every time you feel weary, he will give you the strength to carry on. He knows the proper time of your harvest, and the Holy Spirit wants to bear a harvest of fruit in you. So keep on keeping on in the Lord's strength today, and meditate on Galatians 6:9 every time you need encouragement, friend. Don't give up!
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for promising a harvest for me.
I confess that I often feel tempted to give up when I'm weary.
Jesus, I know you can make me strong.
Help me be faithful in this Christian life.
I trust that you are handling all the good seeds I plant today.
I thank you in advance for the harvest to come.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
