Simple Ways to Encourage Others

By: Sarah Geringer

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

Encouragement builds us up. It seems like every day, life attempts to tear us down. All of us are carrying around hurts,
and we need to be built up rather than torn down even further.

Tearing down is easy. It fits our sinful natures. You can tear others down in word or action without thinking twice. But if you want to be more like Jesus, you must encourage others rather than tearing them down.

Building up requires more energy. It also requires God's help. Encouragement requires sensitivity, creativity and selflessness. You'll need to pause in your busy schedule to offer encouragement. But it doesn't have to be hard. Use these simple suggestions to begin building others up this week.

Here are simple ways you can show encouragement to strangers:

Look the cashier in the eyes and make polite conversation.
Thank the delivery person when he drops off your packages, and smile.
Say hello to people you meet while walking in the park or in the city.

Here are several ways to show encouragement to your coworkers:
Say hello to the underdog in your company every day this week--the warehouse worker, secretary, or anyone else who deserves more attention.
Give a compliment on a coworker's attitude or recent project.
Listen to a coworker's personal stories and offer an affirming and uplifting perspective.

Here are easy ways to show encouragement to your family:
Cook or purchase a favorite meal, just because.
Look up conversation starter questions online and ask your children or spouse to answer one of them. Give positive feedback.
Ask your family member, "How can I pray for you this week?"

I heard a great quote once: "If you are breathing, you need encouragement." Everyone around you needs encouragement! The more you offer, the more peace and blessing you will experience. Encouraging others is important work for God's kingdom. Pray that God will give you eyes to see who needs your encouragement, and go be the hands, feet and voice of Jesus in their lives this week!
