What Are We Seeking?

By: Jenifer Metzger

Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth,
who carry out what He commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be concealed
on the day of the Lord’s anger.
Zephaniah 2:3

I read this verse recently and one word, written three times, stuck out to me. Seek. This verse tells us to seek three things: seek the Lord; seek righteousness; and seek humility.

As I go throughout my days, I seek many things. I seek quiet when life around me is loud. I seek ways to pay my bills. I seek health as I go to the gym. I seek rest as I go to bed at night. I seek enjoyment from chocolate. I seek many things all throughout the day. But, do I seek the Lord? Do I seek righteousness? Do I seek humility?

We need to seek the Lord through prayer, Bible reading, worship, and service. When we truly seek the Lord, everything else falls into place. We need to seek righteousness by trying to live like God wants us. By living a right life obeying His laws and following His commands. We need to seek humility by not thinking we are too good for a Savior, by admitting that we are nothing without God, and by seeing the needs of others.

In all that we seek in our day, I want to encourage you to first and foremost seek the Lord, righteousness, and humility.
