Are You A Fixer too?

By: Shari A. Miller

I'm a person who likes to fix things.

If I see a need or someone in trouble, I like to run to the rescue and save the day, in anyway that I possibly can.

Since my sophomore year in college, I've always had a desire to be an encourager, and to let others know they were not alone. I wanted them to see they were valued, special, and that God loved the more than they could imagine. This is the reason that I became a social worker. For over ten years of my life I gave to others, the best I knew how, so that they would see Jesus living inside of me, and hopefully want to know Jesus for themselves as well.

Fixing things and being there for others is all well and good and an important spiritual gift to have.

However, when it's taken to the extreme and we start using this gift for our own glory and not God's that's when problems can start to happen,

Sometimes, when I like to fix things, I like to do them my way. I get so caught up in the moment that I forget to pray and ask God, what His will and way are.

"Many are the plans in the mind of a man,  but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand."
Proverbs 19:21

This can be problematic and lead to brokenness and rejection, if God is not used in the equation.

God is teaching me little by little, to not hold onto things so tightly, but instead, to turn them over to Him and leave them there. He's teaching me to pry my fingers open, and to let go and let God be God. Of course I/We may still have our concerns, but oh won't it be interesting to leave it in God's hands and let the rest of this story of life unfold.

The big leap of faith comes in trusting Him. Trusting that the infinite God of the universe, that created all that we are, will indeed be able to fix our situation in the way that He sees fit. There is no need to fear that things won't turn out the way we think is best.

I'm going to work on hanging up my, "fix it" hat for a while and lean into God instead, and wait and watch to see what the next chapter in my story will be,

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

  1. Guilty, too!
And the thing I notice is that when I'm in fixer mode, I'm not in listener mode. So often my friends and family need my ear and my prayers more than they need my answers.

  2. Sometimes the willingness for Him to use us morphs into the tendency we have to take over. We need to be so careful to let Him do the leading and directing.

  3. I am so with you on this! I love to do things my way, and often forget to surrender them to God.

  4. I am beginning to learn, albeit slowly, that the best place for me to fix anything is in prayer. Wonderful post!
