Planting Seeds in Marriage

By: Jenifer Metzger

It is spring time. A time for planting. Planting flowers, fruits and vegetables. Even planting grass seed. I don't have a green thumb at all. Pretty much if I even look at it, it dies. My husband on the other hand, does very well with planting. He takes care of my plants for me and has even made us a vegetable garden a few years.

While my thumb is pretty brown, I do know one thing: in order to make something grow, you must plant the seed.

One year we bought several packets of tomato plant seeds. The packets sat on our kitchen counter for several months before I finally just put them into a cabinet. After about a year there, I finally threw them away. They couldn't possibly grow into tomato plants by sitting in the packet on my kitchen counter.

Planting seeds in #marriage

The same is true in marriage. If we want our marriage to grow, we must plant seeds. Seeds of love, affection, respect and honor. If you want your husband to love you with the love of Christ, first love him with the love of Christ and watch that seed grow. If you want your husband to be affectionate, first be affectionate with him and watch that seed grow. If you want him to date you, date him and watch that seed grow. If you want him to be respectful to you, first be respectful to him and watch seeds of respect grow.

On the flip side, if you want disrespect to grow in your marriage, then, by all means, keep planting seeds of disrespect. If you want rudeness to grow, continue planting seeds of rudeness. If you want selfishness to grow in your marriage, keep being selfish yourself.

We won't get apples by planting an orange tree. You will not grow love and respect in your marriage if you are planting hate and disrespect. Plant seeds that will grow your marriage into what God intended it to be.

What seeds are you planting in your marriage?

  1. Dear Jennifer, I really love this analogy. Our marriages needs this Godly seeds to thrive and flourish too. While we also take out weeds and throw out bad seeds. I love this!
