Broken

By: Shari A. Miller

I'm looking at a piece of history that I hold in my hand, a pocket watch that used to belong to my grandpa. He was a farmer in Kansas, during the great depression, a time when things were far from easy, and barely getting by was the norm.

The watch is now broken, it's been a long time since it told the farmer of long ago, how may hours his days would hold. I often wonder what he was doing when the watch stopped. Was he out working in the fields with the dust blowing thick as he worked the combine trying to harvest what little wheat his crop would bare. Or, was he in the comfort of his home, getting ready to lay his head down for a nights rest.

Was he happy? Was he content? Or was he broken in spirit, just like the watch that served him so well.

How about you friends? Are you happy and content? Or have you been broken and weighed down by the troubles of the world. Troubles so hard that they seem to suck the life out of you and break any chance of hope that might have been there.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Friends, at one time or another we've all had moments in our lives when we are broken, when our spirit is tattered by the storms of life and we feel like we can't go on.

During these times we have two choices.....

  1. Hang on to the hurt and pain and let it eat you alive.
  2. Give it to Jesus, lift your hands up, palms open and surrender it all to Him.
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3 (NIV)

This may seem like over spoken rhetoric, words that you've heard time and time again.

However it's pure truth.

Truth that needs to be said over and over again, so it will sink in, take root and grow.

Just like I can take my grandfather's watch to a watch shop to get repaired, you too can take your whole self to Jesus and watch Him repair your life.

He can mend you, He can fix you, He can comfort you when you feel like you can't go on.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:3-4 (NIV)

Are you ready friends? Are you ready to surrender it all to Him?

  5. Shari, thank you for this special word of encouragement. I really needed it right now. I am now in my 2nd week of some virus illness, and I'm feeling so tired. It's just another *thing* in a season of many *things* - and I've become so wearied by it all. But, it's so precious that we can go to the Lord and find a balm for our souls.

Broken, yes, but continually being healed by Him.

    GOD BLESS.
