Marriage Fruits of the Spirit: LOVE

By: Jenifer Metzger

Lately I have been praying the Fruits of the Spirit over my family. Praying that God would help us have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. So when talking to my husband, the wise man he is, he suggested doing a marriage series on the Fruits of the Spirit. So over the next 9 weeks we are going to go over the Fruits of the Spirit and how they apply to marriage. I pray you will join me each Monday and weigh in with your thoughts.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Galatians 5:22-23

The first fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians is love. Love, such a simple 4 lettered word, yet sometimes love is so hard to show.

Sometimes we've had a bad day and showing love is hard. Maybe your husband has made a mistake and it's hard to love him. Possibly you don't feel love coming from him which makes it hard to love him. Love is hard for many reasons. The thing is, love is a choice. We have to choose to love in those times of difficulty. When you don't feel like loving him, love him anyway.

Love him with the love of Jesus. 1 Corinthians 13, known as the love chapter, tells us that love is patient, kind, doesn't envy or boast, it is not proud, that it keeps no record of wrong doings, and is not easily angered. The Word of God also tells us two big things: Jesus is love and we are to be like Jesus. Therefore we are to be love. Love your husband with a 1 Corinthians type love, even when it's hard. Be patient with him, after all he is human (as are we) and will mess up. Show kindness to him, a little kindness goes a long way. Don't envy his successes or boast in your own, don't be proud. Stop keeping record of his mistakes, offer him grace. And be slow to anger, instead, go back to that kindness thing.

Go to the comment section and finish this statement: I love my husband so much because____________________. Then text or call your husband and tell him!
