March Until The Walls Fall Down

By: Jenifer Metzger

I firmly believe two things. One, the Bible teaches us how to live by giving us examples. It isn't just full of stories, it is full of things we can really use and apply to our own lives today. And two, in Jesus, we have power. Power to knock down walls.

Joshua chapter 6 tells us that the Lord promised the land of Jericho to the Israelites. However, there was a very secure wall around the city and no one could get in or out. The Lord gave instruction to Joshua telling him in verses 2-5, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams' horns in front of the ark. On the seventy day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in."

God told them to walk around the city once a day for six days. Then seven times on the seventh day ending with a loud shout. They did and the city became theirs.

I've read this passage many, many times in my life. And in the past ten years or so, every time I read it I imagine little pea people throwing slushies at the Israelites. Veggie Tales you know? Okay, where was I? Oh yea.

We may not have a physical wall around us. But are you facing a spiritual wall? Recently my husband and I have gone through a couple of situations in our family, finances and the attitude of a teenager. We struggled and struggled until I was near tears. I told God one day, "I just feel like I am beating my head against a brick wall here!" Instantly He brought the story of the battle of Jericho to my mind. That's when I decided to do my very own Jericho March.

I shared with one of my best friends who was facing some walls of her own. She wanted to do the march with me. Living hundreds of miles apart, we coordinated our marching time agreeing to pray for our own needs as well as the needs of each other. For six days straight we would text each other that we were getting ready to march, then I quietly slipped out of my house and took one slow lap around my home. I touched the walls of my home as I marched, praying desperately for the needs of my family and my friend. Then on the seventh day I marched around seven times praying. At the end of my seventh lap, I shouted praises to God.

Did things instantly change? No, not immediately. But have I noticed changes in the areas I prayed for? Yes. Did my heart change? Yes! Do I believe that God can and will continue to work in my situations? Yes! Do I believe there is power in a Jericho March? Yes!

Are you facing walls? Do you feel like you are beating your head against a wall? Tear that wall down! Pray and ask God if you should do your own Jericho March.

  2. Jennifer, this is so cool!! So, to do the march, a person literally does what was done in the Bible? I can't get around the whole house because the gate on one side is locked & I don't have the key. I could do the backyard, though, since I live in the basement suite & the backyard's more my space anyway. Thanks for this! :)

    1. Michelle, YES just do what they did in the Bible! :) March once a day for six days then on the seventh day march seven times. I think you would be perfectly fine to do the back yard. I did the perimeter of my house but one of our gates is actually nailed shut so I started on one side of the gate and went all the way around to the exact opposite side. This way I covered every inch even though I couldn't get through. I have also considered doing this just in one room of my home (particularly my son's room since I was dealing with his attitude). I'm so excited that you are going to try!
