Marriage Monday - Love Dare 27

Guard my soul and deliver me;

do not let me be ashamed for I take refuge in You.

Psalm 25:20

Today's love dare is well, let's just say a big ouch for me.  It is something God had to strongly deal with me about in the past and has to gently remind me of often.  If I could talk to a woman about to be married, today's love dare would be my advice to her.

I think nearly every woman alive makes the mistake of entering into marriage thinking her husband will fulfill her every need.  He will be everything she needs and he will be close to perfect.  Oh how that is wrong!  It is an impossible order for our spouse to fill.  Unrealistic expectations breed disappointment.  The higher your expectations, the more likely your spouse will fail you and cause you frustration.

We go into marriage expecting our husband to work hard, come home with a good attitude, provide for our family without difficulty, love his in-laws and enjoy being with them constantly, lead his family spiritually without fail, clean up after himself spotless and treat us like a queen.  Along with many other expectations we place on him.  Sisters, that leaves no room for our husband to be human.  But the reality is, he is human.

Your man is going to mess up.  He is going to do wrong.  He is going to hurt your feelings and say mean things.  Why?  Because he is human and lives in a fallen world.  If you expect him to be perfect, girl you are in for some big disappointment.  Give your husband room for failure.  Give him space to mess up.  Let go of unrealistic expectations and become your hubby's biggest encourager!

Today's Dare:
Eliminate the poison of unrealistic expectations in your home.  Think of one area where your spouse has told you you're expecting too much, and tell him you're sorry for being so hard on him about it.  Promise him you'll seek to understand, and assure him of your unconditional love.

Sweet Blessings~

  1. Love this post. You are an encouragement for every woman. This is advice everyone should take to heart, it is not just for the young marrieds but for the ones that have been married for a long time, we do expect to much of our husbands and it isn't fair to them. Thanks for this advice.

    Blessings to you and love you!!

  2. What you have said here is so good, Jenifer. That is exactly what I have counselled young women about, so many of them expect them to be their husband and best girl friend and it isn't possible.
    I hope many young women read this.
    I know young women who need to hear it now.
    Thanks, Cindy
