What the Bible Teaches about Worship

We have been talking a lot about worship here on Worship Wednesdays; that is kind of the point of this post, isn't it? (smiles)  I want to take the next few weeks to talk about what the Bible has to say about worship.  We will be talking about nine specific things the Bible teaches about worshiping our God.  I hope you will join us in the discussion, either on this blog through the comments or on our Facebook page

Worship is first and foremost an encounter with the living and holy God.

God is our friend.  That is true.

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.  John 15:15

But He is also our Sovereign Lord.
"Do not come any closer," the LORD warned.  "Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground."  Exodus 3:5
To come before God casually shows a lack of respect and sincerity.  If you want to get a picture of Who you are approaching in worship, read Revelation chapter 4.  Our God is Holy.

He loves us - oh, how He loves us!  We don't ever have to be afraid to come to God.  He stands, waiting to receive you with open arms, just like the father in the story of the prodigal son

But when we do come to God, we must remember that we are worshiping the Creator of the universe, He Who still holds the world in His hands.

When you come to God in worship, do you approach Him casually, or do you come as though you were an invited guest before a King?

  1. I have to admit that there are times that I am tired or not in the mood or what have you, so I come casually. But I want and need to come as though I were coming before the Great King. He is God of all, He is everything. I want to reverence Him in that way. Great post.

  2. Was just thinking about the prodigal son story yesterday. So thankful he receives us with open arms when we've gone astray. There is no greater love and He is worthy of our deepest, sincerest praise

  3. This has been very interesting... I revisited Revelation and some commentaries about the meaning behind the imagery. Thank you for sharing! I have been very casual with my worship!! Look forward to more about this theme!

  4. Wow, Lisa! This is a really great post, and I love the questions you raise. I think many of us (myself included) sometimes forget just "who" we're approaching. We're caught up in our busy day and it's easy to take a casual approach to communicating with God. It's so good to be reminded of just Who He is, what He's done and what He will continue to do. Thanks so much and have a wonderful Thanksgiving :)
