A Focus, Not an Act

I tend to be a lot like Martha.(Luke 10:41-42)  I want to sit longer at the feet of Jesus, but there is so much that needs to be done.  Most of the things that I need to do or think about have to do with church and worship.  And worship is a good thing, right?  After all, that is supposed to be the topic on my Wednesday posts.

God showed me that I've been more concerned with the act of worship instead of the focus of worship.

You see, I have been spending hours practicing, planning, and preparing for the act of worship. But how much time have I spent with God, the focus of my worship?  It is good to be prepared, but what does God think about my priorities?

"Is the LORD as delighted with burnt offerings and sacrifices as he would be with your obedience?" 1 Samuel 15:22

What this verse says to me is that while we should be responsible, what God desires more is our attention and our focus.  Another way to put it is this - what good will it do to have a perfect worship service if God is not glorified?

Worship is not just something we do.  While the corporate worship service at church is important, it should just be an overflow of lives spent focused on God all week.

Does your life reflect focus or just an act?

  1. So true. I don't want Sunday morning to be the only time I worship. I want Sunday morning to be an overflow of my worship time alone with God throughout the week. Great reminder!

  2. Worship is not something that we 'do' but an overflow of His goodness to us. I love that!

  3. Worship should be the outward expression of the inward move of God. But as so often happens our flesh gets in the way. It demands that we focus our attention on us and how we are praising rather than focusing on the one that is at work in us, and gives us the choice and ability to praise. Oh to praise him without care of who hears or who see's. I want to praise like David. Unashamed!

  4. Yes, I think worship is more about where the heart is pointed... upward or inward! Great post

  5. OK, this one was for me! Seriously. I sing with the worship team on Sundays, and most of our "practice" time is tied up with sound checks, moving instruments back and forth, arguing about music, trumpets are too loud and drown out the vocalists, etc. I'm so tired of it that I've thought about quitting, but then the enemy would get his way, wouldn't he? It's the work of the enemy that comes between us and our worship. We have to recognize it for what it is! Great post!
