A Life of Hope

 By: Joanne Viola

There are days in which familiar words fall as if they had never been read before. It was like that recently as I read from 1 Peter.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His great mercy has caused us
to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
.”
(1 Peter 1:3, NASB)

We know that our living hope, or any hope at all, is found in and through Jesus. Peter reminds us that our hope is a confident expectation of what God will do. He goes further to make us realize that hope is fully dependent on God’s grace.

“Hope did not die on the cross – it was the cross that brought forth an unshakable hope.”

(from Grace in the Wilderness, by The Daily Grace Co.,  page 15)

Our hope, our inheritance:

  • can never be destroyed
  • nothing can defile it
  • it will never fade

Our hope is past, present, and secured for our future. We have been given such a blessing in having already received our inheritance while we wait to inherit it fully! Amen?

Peter reminds us of our living hope. But the question we need to carefully consider is this one – How can we live a life that overflows with that kind of hope?

Three and a half months ago, I had an injury to my hand. As I sat reflecting on the above question, a song I have been listening to, repeatedly as I drive for my hand therapy, came to mind.

I am currently, in this moment, living with a “confident expectation” of fully regaining use of my hand. It is a long and somewhat painful journey but …. I keep at it. I keep hoping each week for a little gain.

And this is the way we can live a life of hope.

Exercising our spiritual muscles. Pressing on in faith. Keeping our eyes on Jesus. Doing what His Word tells us to do. Taking small steps of faith in our walk with Him.

Jesus –
our living hope,
fills us with hope each day.

Reflection:
What about you? How can you live a life that overflows with that kind of hope? How can you live this life of hope?
