Eight weeks ago now I had an incident where my hand and our hedge cutter had a meeting. It has been a most unexpected and challenging journey still requiring weekly visits to the occupational therapist and monthly to the orthopedic.
Somewhere along my journey, it may have been when it was “National Talk to People in the Elevator Day”, I decided to start talking to people each time I went,
Last week on the drive down I had worship music blasting one of my favorite CD’s. The lyrics were encouraging to my circumstances as mending and healing are my deepest desire.
“I come broken to be mended
I come wounded to be healed
I come desperate to be rescued
I come empty to be filled
I come guilty to be pardoned
By the blood of Christ the Lamb
And I’m welcomed with open arms
Praise God, just as I am.”(Just As I Am – Songwriters: David E. Moffitt / Sue C. Smith / Travis Cottrell)
Encouraged and feeling optimistic, I stepped onto the elevator. In a few seconds, a man came pushing his wife in a wheel chair and another man stepped in.
The woman in the wheel chair remarked she was glad I had improved and was walking well. At that point, I thanked her but showed her my hand.
She shared improvement seems so slow and take a long time. She was discouraged with the process, remarking we are all there for the same purpose.
It was then the other man stated, “We are all here because we are falling apart.”
Stunned by his statement, albeit true, I said, “I respectfully disagree with you sir. We are here to fall back together. To be mended.”
The woman in the wheelchair spoke next, “I like that and am going to remember those words each time I come.”
Having just completed the Bible Study, “Jesus is Better – A Study of the Book of Hebrews“, my heart was full with the realization Jesus is everything.
On days when life feels challenging and perhaps unbearable, Jesus bids us to come to Him.
“Therefore let
us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace,
so that we may
receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
(Hebrews 4:16, NASB)
We come when broken. We come when wounded. We come when desperate. We come when empty. We come when guilty. We come when needy.
"Whatever hurdles, obstacles, or trials come, we keep our eyes on Jesus in order to cross the finish line.”
(from Jesus is Better, by The Daily Grace Co., page 194)
Wherever life may find you today,
Jesus bids us “Come”,
for there we will find His grace and mercy.
Reflection:
We all need the reminder to “Come and draw near” at times. What keeps us
from drawing near? What can we do to draw near more quickly?
