More Than Half | Embracing the Gift of Singleness

 By: Paula Short

For many Christians, singleness can feel like an empty waiting room before the real life of marriage begins. However, what if we reframed this perspective? Singleness isn't a waiting game but a vibrant season filled with unique opportunities and blessings exclusive to this phase of life.

Sometimes, the societal pressure to find a spouse can be overwhelming. We see marriage celebrated all around us, and sometimes, singleness can feel overlooked or even unwanted. But what if we reframed our perspective? The Bible tells us in James 1:17, "Every good and perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father of the heavenly lights..." (NIV). Could singleness be one of those gifts?

The Bible provides clear affirmation for marriage and singleness as gifts from God. In 1 Corinthians 7:7-8, Paul writes, 'I wish that all of you could be like me. But each person has their own gift from God, some have one gift, some have another.' (NIV) Paul himself embraced singleness for the sake of ministry (1 Corinthians 9:21), setting a powerful example for us.

Singleness offers a beautiful space to deepen your relationship with God. Without the distractions of a romantic relationship, you can devote more time to prayer, Bible study, and worship. This undivided devotion allows you to hear God's voice more clearly and become rooted in His love (1 Corinthians 7:34-35).

Singleness also grants you the freedom to pursue your passions and gifts. Perhaps you've dreamed of traveling the world for mission work, starting a non-profit, or mastering a new skill. Now is the time to explore those passions and make a difference in the world around you.

Your singleness allows you to build strong, nurturing relationships with family and friends. You can be fully present for them, offering support and encouragement. Singleness can also open doors to fostering or mentoring opportunities, allowing you to pour love and wisdom into the lives of others.

Finding Joy in Your Season

Embracing singleness doesn't mean pretending you never desire companionship. It's about trusting God's timing and focusing on the present blessings. Here are some ways to find joy in your single season:

Invest in your spiritual growth: Join or start a Bible study or book club, attend Christian retreats, or find a spiritual mentor.

— Develop your passions: Pursue hobbies, take a class, or volunteer for a cause you care about.

— Nurture your relationships: Spend quality time with loved ones, build new friendships, and reach out to those in need.

Seek contentment: Practice gratitude for the gifts you have, and trust that God has a plan for your life.

Reflection's

I've been single for several years now, and it's not a lesser state of being. It's a beautiful chapter in God's story for you. Embrace the freedom, the opportunities, and the chance to deepen your relationship with Him. As you trust in His perfect timing, you'll find that your single season can be a time of incredible growth, purpose, joy, and sharing friendships that feel like family. That's what it's been for me.

Like a wildflower blooming in a forgotten field, your singleness can be a beacon of God's beauty in unexpected places.
