The Truth of Your Identity

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

~ 1 Peter 2:9

"Our identity is not meant to be found in what we do, but in Whose we are, not in what we accomplish, but in what Christ has already accomplished on our behalf."

I penned these words five years ago in the first book I ever wrote, but I have found that in the time since then, I have had to return to the truth of them again and again...and again.

Friend, in a culture always trying to lie to you about what makes up your worth, your identity, and your purpose, you need to be able to take those thoughts captive to the truth of God’s Word (2 Corinthians 10:5).

The truth is that your identity and your acceptance in the eyes of God are not based on your checking off every box on your to-do list each day.

It isn’t based on what all you accomplished this past week.

It isn’t based on whether or not you received that raise you’ve been seeking.

It isn’t based on whether or not you got the job.

It isn’t based on whether or not you managed to not yell at your kids.

It isn’t based on whether or not you got that plus sign on the pregnancy test.

It isn’t based on whether or not that relationship is going to work out.

It isn’t based on whether or not you are “perfect”.

It’s based solely on the One whose righteousness you now bear as a child of God who has been washed in the blood. It’s based on who Christ has made you to be - a saint, one redeemed by Him and loved and accepted forevermore. That is your identity. Nothing else comes close.

Reflection Questions:

1. What lies have you been believing about your identity?

2. In what have you been basing your identity? Is this appropriate? What changes might need to be made in your perspective?

3. If someone asked you who you are, how would you reply? How would you describe yourself in light of your being a child of God?
