Don't Get Tired of Doing Good

BySarah Geringer

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

Galatians 6:9 NLT

Last year, I chose Galatians 6:9 as my meditation verse of the year. As I meditated on this verse daily, God used it to reveal several ways in which I grow weary of doing good. Maybe you also struggle with growing weary in areas like these:

1. Exercise
2. Flossing
3. Tidying up my house
4. Filing paperwork
5. Praying for others
6. Serving others with selflessness
7. Forgiving seventy times seven
8. Spending time with God just because I enjoy him

Points one and two are for my long-term health. They matter in both the short and long term. Yet I can often lose sight of the long-term gains and settle for short-term comfort.

Points three and four boost my well-being. I feel better in a clean, organized environment. But I'm more likely to jump back into my work than spend a few minutes every day cleaning up.

Points five, six and seven make big differences in my relationships. But I don't always see the effects right away. They often make a bigger difference in my attitude than in the interactions I have with others.

Point eight is an issue in my relationship with God. How often do I go to God with requests for help or fixing things, rather than praising and worshiping him? Rather than sitting at his feet and telling him how much I love him? Way too often, because my eyes are fixed on the problems of the here and now rather than the eternal.

Do you see the common thread in all these points? I tend to grow weary in doing good because I take my eyes off the promised harvest to come.

Focusing on this promised harvest takes hope, courage and faith. I can only do that with God's help. I need to remember he's right by my side, every minute of every day, encouraging me to not give up. He's holding the future in his hands, and wants me to choose hope instead of weariness. He wants that for you too, friend.

Father God,

I praise you today as Lord of the harvest.

You can see the harvests to come, even when I lose sight of them.

I trust that you have a wonderful harvest for me at just the right time.

Help me lean on you when I get tired of doing good.

Remind me that you are right by my side, and I am never alone.

Renew my strength so I can choose what's best for my good and for your glory.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
