The Power of Meditating on One Psalm

BySarah Geringer

He fills my life with good things.

Psalm 103:5 NLT

Have you ever parked your mind on one part of God's Word for a while? Since 2017, I've chosen a verse for the whole year and meditated on it daily. I can now look back and see how God used that single verse to change my heart and mind for the better in 365 days.

I'm a big fan of the One Year Bible, which takes you through a daily reading of the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs. I've been using this Bible study method since 2003, and it's greatly shaped my faith.

For the past two or three weeks, I've been parked on one psalm. I'm not exactly sure why God had me stay put on one single psalm, but it's been a good way to let it steep deeply into my spirit, day after day.

Psalm 103 focuses mostly on praise, but it also focuses on more. It also moves me to study God's character and ways, thank him for his forgiveness, and learn to mimic his actions in my own life. God has even moved me to pray this Psalm verse by verse for others during this deep time of focus.

With this daily look at a single psalm, God is reorienting my focus. He's inviting me to praise him daily, going on a hunt for all the good things in my life. I feel more positive and joyful just from this deep dive of meditation. I'm truly noticing that he has filled my life with many, many good things.

There are many wonderful psalms you can choose for meditation. Lots of them are short and easy to go through. Psalm 23 is a perennial favorite. But there are many more. I encourage you to pick one and meditate on it every day this month, and watch for how God will use it to change you.

Christian meditation is simply focusing on a scripture with repetition and focus. If you haven't developed a regular practice of Christian meditation yet, the Psalms are a great place to start. Pray while you choose a psalm, asking the Holy Spirit to help you select one to guide you in the next month. Thirty days from now, I guarantee your spirit will be uplifted in new ways.
