Gratitude in the Senses

Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows.
James 1:17

As I sit here and type, I look to out the window and see the bright sun shining through the budding green trees bending in the wind. I hear the leaves rustling as wind whips through and a lawn mower off in the distance.  I reach down to pet my Dalmatian begging for my attention and feel his soft fur. I smell the calming lavender coming from my essential oil diffuser. And I taste the delicious goodness of a homemade chai latte. In just a matter of seconds, all five senses were engaged. All sweet blessings.

So often we are so focused on trying to find the "big" blessings that we miss those little things. We are fighting for a promotion at work, but forget to be thankful we have a job. We are so rushed to get through to the next season of life, but forget to enjoy this season. We are so busy getting through our to-do list each day, but we don't make time to stop and smell the roses -literally and figuratively.

One thing I have been trying to focus on to count the little blessings, is to focus on the senses. What can I be thankful for right now that I can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. This practice helps me to slow down and look for the little things.

Today I want to challenge you to use your five senses to find something you can praise God for right now. Share your list in the comments!

It's time for Share A Link Wednesday! Each Wednesday we invite you to leave a link to your latest blog post in the comments. We still desire to connect women of God with one another and encourage each other in Christ. So grab a cup of coffee or glass of sweet tea, sit back and visit a few blogs. Be encouraged and share your own stories.

  1. Let's see--we had one of my favorite chicken dishes for dinner, which is seasoned with chili powder, brown sugar, salt, pepper, garlic, and sprinkled with bacon bits. Smelled and tasted so good! After a couple of cloudy, rainy days, we have beautiful blue skies and sunshine. I had my "sacred instrumental" playlist on while making dinner and getting dressed, which set my thoughts in good places. And I had a nap in my desk chair with my just-the-right-weight sweater draped over me. A good day!

I wrote this week about being faithful whether we're out in front or behind the scenes: https://barbaraleeharper.com/2021/05/09/faithful-in-obscurity-2/.
