Thanking God in Your Overwhelm

By: Sarah Geringer

Are you feeling overwhelmed today, like I am?

I am buried in work, home responsibilities, and more. But I'm choosing to fight back the overwhelm with this:

Looking for thankfulness in the little things.

I'm doing a one-minute free-write for little things I can be thankful for today. Here's my list:

1. The gorgeous purple petunias spilling from my window boxes.
2. The free books I get because I'm a blogger--my Kindle app is loaded! Love that I can read books on my mini IPad while I walk on the treadmill too.
3. Dark chocolate squares that satisfy my cravings for sweetness and richness.
4. A lovely break from heat and humidity after a morning rainstorm.
5. Several items checked off my to-do list today. They are small, but they show progress!

That's my short, one-minute thankful list. It inspires me to give MORE thanks to God!

I challenge you to a one-minute, thankful-for-the-little-things list today. Does it lift your spirits, as it does mine?

Here's the scripture that inspired me:
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Philippians 4:6-8 NLT

I need to fix my thoughts on little things to be thankful for when I feel overwhelmed. Those little things lift me up and remind me that God loves me and will help me through. They give me the peace I'm seeking in my day, and I know you need God's peace just as much as I do!

I'd love to hear from you...what are YOUR one-minute thankful things?

Reflection questions:

1. Who is the kindest person you know? What is their motivation for showing kindness?

2. What step can you take today to show kindness?
